2010 Teach English on Korea Government Scholarship

Position: Selected scholars will receive Korean Government Scholarships and teach English in after-school classes of Korean elementary schools while.

Eligibility:

- Undergraduate student with two or more years of university education, or a college/ university graduate

* Ethnic Koreans who are in their 1st or 2nd year of college/ university are eligible also.

Duties, Allowance & Benefits:

- Six months or one year contract, starting February, 2010

(The contract may be extended for an additional period not to exceed two years in total.)

- Teaching hours: 15hrs/week

- Benefits:

1) Monthly Stipend

Payment of monthly stipend(a fixed amount of 1,500,000 KRW) begins in March 2010. During the preparatory orientation in February, room & board will be provided instead of the monthly stipend.

 

2) Settlement Subsidy (one-time payment)

A fixed amount of 300,000 KRW is given soon after school placement.

 

3) Accommodation or Fixed Monthly Rent

The POE will decide the type of accommodation for each scholar (e.g. a studio-type room or a home- stay). If a scholar wishes to make his or her own accom-modation arrangement, a rent subsidy (a fixed fee of 400,000 KRW) will be provided instead. Any fees, charges, taxes, expenses, etc. incurred in using the apartment shall be borne by the individual.

 

4) Round-trip Airfare

Upon acceptance to the TaLK program, a one-way, economy-class international flight ticket will be provided, as well as a return ticket at the completion of the contract term.

 

5) Traveler’s Health Insurance

All TaLK scholars are entitled to traveler’s health in-surance throughout the TaLK scholarship period. The selection of the insurance company is arranged under the direction of your POE, and the claim process may differ depending on the company policy.

 

6) Paid Leave

6-month contract

7 days (based on a 5 day work week)

12-month contract

14 days - 7 days per semester (based on a 5 day work week)

 

7) Sick Leave  ** A doctor’s medical report/ a physician note must be submitted if taken for 3 days or more.

8) TaLK Orientation

  ¡á As an easier transition and networking opportunity, the TaLK Orientation is designed to give you the foundation you need to make a successful start into your teaching career as well as helping you adjust to life in Korea. You will gain an insight to life as a TaLK scholar and a chance to have your questions/concerns answered during this orientation period. You will also have the opportunity to meet with your POE supervisor, co-teacher and Korean scholar(s) and to spend some time with them for team building and ice breaking activities.

  ¡á All expenses including food, accommodation, participation in activities, etc. during the Orientation will be covered by the TaLK Program. If, for any reason, you fail to complete the Orientation, it will be considered as a breach of your contract.

 

9) Buddy System

POE-designated Korean scholars will be made available based on your Korean proficiency to help you adjust to Korean life as well as run and manage the after-school classes. Please note that Korean scholars may not be assigned to those who are well aware of Korean culture and language.

 

10) Government Scholar Certificate

A certificate of Korean Government Scholarship will be pre-sented at the end of the contract term to those who have successfully participated and completed all required parts of the TaLK program.

 

11) Cultural Experience Programs

A variety of programs for experiencing the Korean culture will be offered under the independent supervision of the POE. Cultural experiences may be held on weekends or weekdays when scholars are free (e.g. public holidays) or which the POE arranges.

- All the required documents must be sent to Korean Education Centre at the Korean Consulate General in Toronto by mail or in person.
